This artistic wooden bowl is made from the Paradise Tree (Tree of Heaven). The extra large bowl had a few cracks, so instead of scrapping the whole project I filled them with resin. There is also a resin window on the edge. Since this bowl is finished with a coat of epoxy, it can even be used as a salad bowl. It truly is functional art.
I made this bowl from a Paradise Tree from my friend Paul’s yard. The previous owner of his home let the backyard become completely overgrown, limiting the access. Since he could not access his yard, he hired a tree service to cut down several trees. Paul saved the trees for firewood. After the tree service finished, I helped Paul cut up the wood and took home a couple truck loads to turn into beautiful bowls.
The Paradise Tree (Tree of Heaven) seems to grow anywhere and grow very quickly. It came to the United States in the 1700’s from China as a horticulture specimen and as a shade tree. Since it has few insect predators and grows so quickly, it became quite popular in urban settings. Many cities and home owners across the United States have planted the Paradise Tree (Tree of Heaven).
However, it has an aggressive root system and can even kill other plants growing close to it. With it’s aggressive root system, it causes a lot of damage to sidewalks, foundations and sewers. It is now considered an invasive species and is also difficult to remove from the landscape. Even though it is an invasive species, it does make beautiful bowls.
