This unique hand turned wood bowl is made from a Utah Ash tree.  The wood for this bowl came from a friend’s yard in Layton, UT.  When he bought his house, the yard was completely overgrown.  He removed several trees and let me take any wood that I wanted.  Any wood that did not go home with me went into the firewood pile.

This large bowl is extremely unique with its grain pattern, cracks filled with glue and holes filled with resin.  On one side of the bowl you can see the bark of the tree.  I filled the cracks with black CA glue. Cracks like the ones in this bowl are often considered flaws by some woodturners. I like filling them and highlighting the character of the wood.

In addition to the cracks, there were holes in this bowl.  I filled these holes with clear resin, creating a window at the edge of the bowl.

This eye catching bowl is gallery quality piece.  This unique hand turned wood bowl is a statement piece for a dining room table, coffee table, or entry way table.

The Ash tree is common in Utah.  They can grow to large, beautiful shade trees.  Here’s a closer look at the Ash tree.
