This is a perfect decorative bowl for a coffee table. I made this large bowl from a Utah Russian Olive tree.  This bowl has tons of character with an amazing grain pattern.  The grain in this softer Russian Olive wood is fascinating and the contrast of the sap wood is WOW!  The contrasting colors really stand out.

I made this bowl from a Russian Olive tree from my friend Paul’s yard.  The previous owner of his home let the backyard become completely overgrown, limiting the access.  Since he could not access his yard, he hired a tree service to cut down several trees.  Paul saved the trees for firewood.  After the trees were cut down, I helped Paul cut up the wood and took home a couple truck loads to turn into beautiful bowls.

The Russian Olive is often considered a ‘trash tree’ and is also considered an invasive species in several states.  Russian Olive trees were introduced in Utah in the 1900’s for erosion control, wind breaks and ornamental landscaping.  The Russian Olive thrived in harsh and dry climate of Utah.  It pushed out native vegetation making it an invasive species.  However, despite being problematic, they do make really pretty bowls.
