The Process of Creation

Most of my pieces are made of wood that was destined for the firepit or for the compost pile.  So much of the wood I use has been sitting for a long time and has plenty of cracks and character.  Instead of trashing these pieces of wood that some people wouldn't want to work with, I use epoxy resin and glue to turn them into use-able art.

The cottonwood stump

A few years ago a long time friend called and said she had an old stump that had been sitting outside of her dad's shop (a building that I helped build) for many years. The shop was being torn down for road expansion. The stump had been "part of the family" for so long that she hated to see it go to the dump, and wondered if I could do something with it. A few years later, after the stump hung out in my yard for a while. I finally got the right tools for doing something with it. it took several weeks for the epoxy work and finishing, but I came up with 3 fantastic tabletops. the first one of course went back to the friend who gave me the stump; and the other 2 were spoken for before they were finished.

Bowl #263 Process

On many of my pieces, I like to get some process photos to go with the finished piece. For me, it is a fascinating process to take a piece of what some would see only firewood, and turn it into something beautiful, artistic, and useful. This piece came from a tree that my sister cut down in her yard in Boise to make room for a back porch expansion.

Bowl #238 Process

My neighbor gave me this little apple root ball just to test my skills I think. I love the result!
