This hand turned wooden bowl is made from an American Elm from the Salt Lake Valley. In the mid 20th century the Dutch elm disease wiped out many of the American Elm trees across the entire country. So it is a rare thing to be able to work with any American Elm wood.
I had a construction client in the Salt Lake Valley that had a surviving American Elm tree that lost a limb in a storm. She saved some of the wood for me to make into bowls. This is the last of the bowls that I made from her tree.
This hand turned wooden bowl had some cracks and holes in it. Instead of throwing away this piece, I filled it with epoxy and created a unique small bowl. You won’t find very many pieces made from the American Elm.
