I made this large bowl from a Tulip Poplar tree in Tennessee.  I rescued the wood for this bowl out of a fire pile on my property in the Sparta area.   This large bowl can be used as a large wooden salad bowl.

The spalting in this bowl is just one of things that make it a unique piece.  Spalting always adds such beautiful character and is highly sought after by wood workers.  Spalting is actually fungus rotting the wood with all the right circumstances.  Here’s a little more information on how the spalting process works.

The other unique features of this large bowl are the bark on either side of the bowl and the cracks filled with epoxy resin.  The pith (the center of the tree) dries at a different rate than the other layers of the wood.  This leads to cracking.  I love how filling the cracks helps preserve the center of the tree and its growth rings.

This bowl would be a great large wooden salad bowl.  It makes a great one of a kind wedding or house warming gift.  I finished this bowl with matte finish lacquer that is non-toxic when fully cured.
